The Progressive Optimist Club of Barbados (POCB) had invited Members of the Media and specially invited guest to be a part of our “Sight-Box Presentation to the School for the Visually Impaired here in Barbados as part of our Childhood Health and Response Mission (CHARM) Program.

The Presentation took place on Monday 12th July, 2021, at 11:00 am at the Barbados Council for the Disabled Harambee House, The Garrison in St Michael.

As an affiliate of Optimist International, “POCB” seeks to advance the goals of Optimist International whose mandate is “Bringing out the Best in Youth, Communities & Ourselves“.

Our Club had consented to receive a Sight-Box donation from St. Vincent’s School for the Visually Impaired in Liverpool England thanks to Angela Williams. Special thanks to Mr. Robin Baynes (MBE) founder of “Liverpool Heartbeat” & ‘New Start” Charities for recommending Barbados as one of the recipients.

In keeping with one of Optimist International’s theme of focusing on “Children with Learning Disabilities”, getting this Sight-Box was a top priority for our Club. Our intention was to donate the Sight-Box to the School for the Visually Impaired here in Barbados.

What is a Sightbox? What does it do?

Sightbox was created by visually impaired children from St Vincent’s School in Liverpool who were extremely concerned with the lack of access to equipment and technology for visually impaired children and individuals living in third-world countries. Working with the Liverpool Rotary Club, St. Vincent’s School worked to fund and create the Sightbox to be shipped to children who were visually impaired like them.

A Sightbox is a container filled with equipment which provides blind and visually impaired children with the technology needed to access sports and have a more independent lifestyle.
